FAQs

What is ADAS?

ADAS is an acronym for “Advanced Driver Assist Systems.” ADAS features on modern vehicles vary but are designed to perform functions to keep the car occupants safe. Two common examples of ADAS would be Adaptive Cruise Control or Automatic Emergency Braking. Another example, though newer, would be a Pedastrian Alert System. On older vehicles, the main version of early ADAS technology would be Electronic Stability Control.

Does my car have ADAS technology?

An easy way to determine is to utilize cruise control. If your car automatically slows down as you get closer to the car in front then you have ADAS on your car. Also, another way to determine if you car has ADAS is to look at the rear view mirror assembly from the windshield side. If you see a camera, then you have ADAS.

How do I know when to service my ADAS technology?

First, if your vehicle has been in a collision then some basic research is performed by the repair shop. In doing the research, its often determined via OEM position statements or OEM procedural information as to what ADAS tech may have been affected and would require service. Second, certain OEMs recommend or require ADAS calibrations after wheel alignment service. Lastly, you may get an intermittent warning message on you car’s information screen advising to service an ADAS component such as “Service Cruise Control” or "Radar Detection Service.” Since ADAS technology isn’t regulated similar to combustion engine emissions standards, the Check Engine Light may not illuminate in the event of improper ADAS function.

Can I service ADAS myself?

Hypothetically, yes. But to properly service ADAS equipped cars requires extensive automotive knowledge, lots of equipment and technology along with specialized fixtures and tooling to meet the OEM service procedural needs. This equipment and technology would be extremely expensive to the DIY mechanic. Even most collision repairers or general auto service centers lack the tooling, training and indoor space to properly perform the work.
